The Employment and Recruitment Service can support you in the shortlisting process, but if you choose to shortlist applications yourself, here is some guidance to make the process as seamless and fair as possible:

  • Firstly assess which applicants have the essential criteria for the role.
  • Consider which candidates have the desirable criteria.
  • Look for candidates’ relevant experience in their CV and cover letter.
  • Check whether your shortlist contains a good gender mix.

Tips for Interviewing

If you are interviewing applicants, you should take time to develop interview questions that will adequately inform you of candidates’ suitability to the role you are recruiting for. Similarly, you should try to make a comfortable atmosphere that allows applicants to confidently answer those questions.

  • For video or phone interviews, ensure you are in an appropriate place to conduct the interview where they will not be interference.
  • Make the interviewee as comfortable as possible by taking time to introduce yourself, other interviewers, and explaining the structure of the interview.
  • Centre the questions around the person specification criteria so that candidates can demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and experience in those areas.
  • Try to use concise and clear competency-based questions, such as, “Please give me an example of when…”, so that candidates can relate their experience with the essential skills needed for the role.
